Shop / snuggle sac angel wings knitted throw blanket
Although the story of Manual Woodworkers & Weavers dates back to 1932 when Thomas Lemuel Oates founded the company, the roots of the business can be traced to his entrepreneurial spirit. Oates and his brother used to farm the mountain areas of Bat Cave in western North Carolina, and they would also assist their mother in finding materials for her crafts. The sons began to make wooden whistles, buckets, and bird-houses, which they would sell along with her crafts to the people from Charlotte who passed through in their horse-drawn buggies on their way to the mountains.
Later, Thomas Oates worked at the Ashville Postcard Company, but when the Great Depression hit, he lost his job. This inspired him to go into business and sell crafts, such as cornhusk dolls and woven pieces, that were produced by the local women. He had learned about the wholesale business while working at Ashville. Oates built a waterwheel to generate electricity at a mill, began making products, and opened shop. Over the years, he expanded the company.
Oates' son, Lemuel Oates, who would later manage the company, says he worked in the business from a young age. He explains that the products were made from cotton scraps left over from making socks. Half-inch circles would be looped together to form a variety of products. Lemuel Oates went to college and then settled in Richmond, but in December 1973, he returned to Bat Cave and took over the company.
In 2007, Lemuel's son Travis and daughter, Molly Oates Sherrill, took over the business. Today, Manual Woodworkers & Weavers offers a range of inspirational products, including a cotton tapestry throw with a fringed design. This generously sized (50 x 60-inch) throw can be used to cover a bed, drape over a couch, or adorn a comfy chair, featuring a shining angel in a blooming garden with wings unfurled. The throw is made in the USA, and customers are encouraged to search for matching pillows and other decor items from Manual Woodworkers.
The story of Manual Woodworkers & Weavers reflects the entrepreneurial spirit and dedication of the Oates family, who have carried on the tradition of craftsmanship and innovation for over 90 years. The company's products, like the inspirational tapestry throw, continue to be a testament to the family's rich history and enduring commitment to quality and creativity.
